Environment

The land and water sustain all life, and caring for them is a shared responsibility. By using energy responsibly, protecting shorelines, responding to a changing climate, and living respectfully with wildlife, we work to honour the land today while safeguarding it for those yet to come.

CGIFN entered into an Environmental Management Agreement to enact environmental protection legislation on reserve. We developed a set of by-laws that ensure environmental impacts on our lands are prevented or minimized. In 2008, an environmental scan was conducted to identify the environmental issues and priorities and to develop programs and services addressing the needs of the community.

Community Energy Plan

Our energy vision:

The Chippewas of Georgina Island are among the leading Ontario First Nations communities in terms of energy conservation, comprehension, self-sufficiency, and support of other First Nations communities in these areas.

A Community Energy Plan (CEP) is a long-term strategy for improving the community's energy efficiency and identifying opportunities to move forward according to the community's energy vision.

Our first CEP was completed in 2015 and has been periodically updated since then. To develop and update our CEP, we calculate the current energy use on the island, review heating methods being used (electricity, propane, heating oil, etc.) and seek input from the community to identify our future needs and the views of our members.

Protecting the Ribbon of Life

The shoreline zone is the first 30 meters from the shoreline inland. This is the most sensitive area of the shore, and needs the most protection.

The shoreline of your community and personal property acts as an important buffer and filter for the water that flows into Lake Simcoe. In order to protect the waters, the shoreline needs to be looked after, and an attempt made to keep it in its natural state.

In the event of a natural disaster or other emergency, you will likely need to take care of yourself and your family for at least 72 hours without electricity or running water. Build a 72+ Hour Kit to prepare and keep it up to date.
