York Region Transit

The Chippewas of Georgina Island partnered with York Region Transit to install and name a new bus shelter at the Georgina Island ferry docks, marking the first transit shelter in York Region to carry an Anishinaabmowin name. Named Maamwi ndibi nooshimin—meaning “together we are sheltering from the elements”—the shelter reflects the community’s language, values, and teachings of togetherness shared across generations. A collaborative team developed signage featuring transit information, cultural context, original Indigenous artwork, and a QR code linking to language resources. The project enhances transit service, fosters community connection, and supports Anishinaabmowin language revitalization by carrying forward a shared message of care, belonging, and community.
